back in 2008/2009. NATO logistics in Afghanistan where almost impossible to execute.
It was because the land-route trough Pakistan became one death-trap. ground supply route's where impossible.
NATO hired multiple Russian company's to facilitate air logistics to keep operations going throughout all of Afghanistan.

I worked heavily with them after getting the "dont trust Russians" warning.

After a while, i loved the Russian designed hardware for its ease of repair, resilience to the environment and turnaround time.
And the Russian Crews, absolutely.
They went out in bad weather conditions where NATO pilots refused.

Also the Russian Aircraft outperformed NATO aircraft.
This because the Russian aircraft carried modifications that where made for Afghanistan's hostile natural environment and high-altitude above sea level.
I loved the soviet aircraft. Their large transport aircraft where more like self-sustaining hotels to their own crews and their helicopters could get shot up and could get self-repaired by their crews most of the time in a few hours.
Not like the NATO aircraft that required days of servicing and inspection.
Some MI-26 got shot up on it's approach to an FOB, it had to perform an emergency land. After a few hours of repairs by three crew members the MI-26's spun up its engines. after a short hover-test it took off again to its main base.
Doing this with NATO aircraft in the middle of an battlefield is impossible.

This extends to Russian Weaponry as well. We tested out AK-47's. Real russian ones. not copies. they where just as accurate as our Diemaco (M-16 lookalikes) at 300 meters.
The Chechs brought in the Dragunov's we could test out with. amazing DMR weapons.

i also talked with some of the russian crews. First just work, then a bit of idle chit-chat. And eventually about how this entire afghan war by NATO was insanity.
And speaking a few times about the geopolitical situation, about Russia's legitimate security interests and ...lets just say "shared " frustrations about the primary NATO entity operating in Afghanistan.

The challenge that non smart ammo presents, actually hitting the target

Well actually there are vastly more targets on the battlefield than just vehicles... and when helicopters start hitting armoured vehicles you will get crews abandoning their vehicles and scattering... which makes them impossible targets for guided weapons because there are just too many of them.

Unguided artillery is an area weapon and landing shells near armoured vehicles might appear to be pointless but any troops outside the vehicles or on the ground near by would be in great danger to a few shells landing around the place.

Obviously one or two shells and it is clearly ineffective, but against a concentrated group of enemy you don't fire one or two shells, you launch hundreds of shells and in that situation it is concentration and density of fragments and it becomes enormously effective against large groups of enemy that guided precision weapons simply cannot deal with.

To put it in simple terms it is the difference between a sniper and a machine gun... when a group of four or five men try to sneak across an open field you want a sniper or two, but when 300 men start crossing the field you are wasting your time with a sniper rifle... you need a machine gun or automatic grenade launcher to really have any effect.

The previous Ukrainian pushes last year that pushed the Russian forces did so simply because the Russians didn't have enough fire power to deal with large volumes of targets at once.

Now they have more guns and more artillery support and air support it is going to take enormous volumes of enemy to overwhelm them and force a retreat now and it will come at an enormous cost.

A bit off the current situation. Does anyone have any numbers or links to Info on numbers of neo Nazis fighting in Ukrainian forces. Any Info would be great. I don't think any one platform or weapon is the solution... they are going to need a range of solutions but airburst 30mm and 40mm and 57mm shells would seriously be a useful part of the solution.

Radar and modern EO including thermals, plus I think Lidar could be components in the solution, with jammers as well as weapons like guns and even lasers and other exotic weapons might be part of a solution, but could also include FPV drones that are flown by "pilots" perhaps fitted with belt fed 12 gauge shotguns... the ammo is cheap and available in enormous volumes and if you can fly to within 20 metres or so then you have a good chance of a kill with a 1 to 3 round burst...

Detection is key because often you don't know you are under drone attack until things start exploding or accurate enemy fire arrives.

The new range of SAMs they are developing to protect from artillery and rocket attack (an presumably guided and unguided ordinance of all types too) will require defence vehicles with decent detection performance against drones and incoming ordinance.

The Soviet Union had the first operational anti satellite system in 1973. And Russia tested a modernized system in 2015 and 2021.
