It has always been a dumb argument in use by dumb fanboys who had the regular issue of finding their own arses using one hand.

The reason it makes sense is because in a sense it is true... if your product has never been tested in war then how can you say it is the best and is effective in war.

The problem is when they claim because something has not gone to war therefore it is untested and is probably crap, or that something that has been to war quite a lot must be good because they still use it.

If you look at how the Russians develop and test their gear you start to understand.... an air defence battery might go on exercise where it drives 2,000km to a remote location and then defend targets at that remote location from various types of air attack.

They use their own excellent air defence systems to practise their attacking systems and vice versa.

Russian anti ship missiles are so good because they test them against their own air defence systems and their naval and land based air defence systems are so good because they test them against their attack missiles.

The ongoing war proved how clueless dispute it has always been, and - sadly - how the Soviet era gear is a much more robust and solid tool of war.

There is a focus in the west on features or capabilities that might not actually be very relevant in an actual combat situation.

Soviet and Russian weapons tend to be practical and lack bells and whistles unless that is what is needed.

They also tend to work well.

You should have a one on one conversation with David Axe. David Axe writes about ships, planes, tanks, drones and missiles. He knows everything. He is an expert

He is probably very well paid and is earning his keep trying to fool the western world that they remain the best and are the brightest and are the champions and right and honesty and purity in the universe...

Funny, but keep in mind that he is one of a legion who creates a "common knowledge".

It is his kind that will be part of the expert panel to determine what is fact and what is enemy disinformation when western censorship laws start being implemented...
